The Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings’ new head coach will be a familiar face for the returning players. After spending the last three years as an assistant, Tyson Ramsey has been promoted to head coach for next season, replacing Ken Schneider who stepped down. Ramsey, a 37-year-old Brandonite, is excited to take over as bench boss and continuing the success of the program.
“I think I have a good relationship with a lot of the players who are coming back and I think I understand the program being involved for the last three years and how it works,” he said. “I understand the commitment and work ethic it takes to run a program at the AAA midget level. It’s an extremely competitive league and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
The Wheat Kings had a lot of success under Schneider, reaching the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League semifinals in all four years of his tenure. Brandon posted the league’s best regular-season record at 39-3-2 last season. Ramsey, who mainly ran the forwards on the bench last season, knows he has big shoes to fill to replace Schneider, but feels the continuity of having an assistant take over as head coach will provide stability and keep the program successful.
“I think (having continuity is) good, especially for your returning players,” he said.
“They have an idea before they come to camp what things are going to be like. I’m not saying everything will remain the same, there obviously will be a few changes along the way to make it my own team, but for the players coming back it will be a familiar situation, which is nice for them to have. I think we’ve had some success over the last couple years so hopefully we can build on that.”
Ramsey held various coaching jobs in Hockey Brandon before joining the
AAA Midget squad in 2011. He also played in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League with the
Winkler Flyers from 1993-97, with the Brandon University Bobcats from 1997-2001 and senior hockey with the AAA Ils Des Chenes North Stars and in the Tiger Hills Hockey League with the Souris Elks.
