FINAL WEEKEND OF REGULAR SEASON!

02/13/2015, 12:30pm CST
By Ryan Dupre

The Eastman Selects are gearing up for the last weekend of regular season play this weekend! With two pivotal games to keep there hopes alive in moving up in the standings.

After a split last weekend the Selects are in need of a sweep this weekend if they are going to have any chance to leap frog the Winnipeg Thrashers for 3rd place.
The team travels to portage la prairie on Saturday to play the struggling Central Plains Capitals, and then return home Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm to close out the regular season against the Interlake Lightning.

At the conclusion of the regular season there will be a two week break due to the Canada winter games in Prince George, BC. The team would like to wish Brett Davis good luck at the games as he will be one of the members of team manitoba!

With so many teams so tightly bunched up in the standings a first round matchup is still in question. One thing does look good is the Selects are in a good position for home ice advantage in the first round.

SELECTS REGAIN WINNING FORMULA!

The Eastman Selects snapped their 4 game losing streak this past weekend  with 2 strong performances! Saturday night in Tuelon marked the return of the teams leading scorer Brad Goethals and that seemed to give the team some confidence.  After falling behind 2-0 to the Lightning the Selects stormed back and took a 4-2 lead mid way through the third. The lightning scored 1 more to make it close but mike Berard put the game on ice with a late empty net goal and the Selects skated away with a 5-3 victory. Devon Skoleski lead the way with 3 points and Brad Goethals also had a pair of points in the victory.

The next afternoon in Beausejour the team hosted the Kenora Thistles. The Selects came out flat and really leaned on rookie net minder Landon Poiron, who got back to playing his stellar goaltending after having troubles in his last 2 starts. Despite being outshot 20-9 in the first period the Selects escaped the first tied 1-1. After what I'm sure was an inspirational talking to by the coach in the first intermission, the Selects came out firing in the next 2 periods still relying a little bit on Poiron to bail them out at times. The Selects found their skating legs and started pushing the pace against the much bigger but slower Kenora team. The boys skated away with a 5-2 victory, but more importantly seemed to have found confidence once again after a tough couple weeks.

The Selects still sit in 4th place but are only 1 point behind both the Brandon Wheatkings and Winnipeg Thrashers for 2nd place with 2 weeks remaining.

The Selects next action is Friday night when they host the last place Norman Northstars and then they travel to the Iceplex Saturday afternoon to take on the first place Winnipeg Wild!
